Fairfield took on the responsibility of educating and developing this young man. We should see it through.
We should make it a win-win situation for all involved.

You want the University to find out what is bothering this Gai? Do not forget how the University handled his "issue" last year - can you say suspension beyond what is rational? and you think they will be helpful in persuading this Gai to stay on board..

Attitudes like this Gai's are what divide a team at it's core (can you say prima donna) and your inane "speculation" about Mcleod's departure and "X-Files tie" to this situation are absurd and irresponsible -

too many people telling him he is "too good" for the MAAC, yet he is not close to there yet - and is not willing to work hard to get there.. mark my words, there is a place for this Gai in a "Big Time" school as well as the NBA - it is called the Bench!

[> [> [> Get Facts Straight - It's all about Gai and not TEAM! selfish = CRAP -- Proud Papa, 18:17:28 03/12/03 Wed

YMM, The only facts you got right are that the suspension he received was beyond rational. The rest of your assessment of Gai is off - way off. Naut hit the nail on the head - on all points. Gai's presence alters a game and opponents game plans. His defense speaks for itself. His blocks are deflating and demoralizing. He takes the pressure off the guards on the defensive end - they can let their man slip by knowing Deng Gai is there. THE PROBLEM IS - this is not reciprocated by the guards on the offensive end. Gai has to fight for everything because he is not getting the ball. The guards are not taking the pressure off of Gai in the post - they don't consistently take, or hit outside shots to loosen the post. Early, defenses collapsed on Gai because they didn't fear the guards. It got worse, defenses started defending the guards because the didn't fear passes to the post. How many times have you seen FF run a play to feed the post? How many entry passes do you see to Gai in the post? The reason he's one of the team's best 3-pt. shooters is because he'll drift out just to touch the ball. YMM says he's an ineffective post player - when you don't get the ball, it's hard to any kind of player. All season, FF's best attempt to get Gai the ball low were often errant olley-oops. How many olley-oops did you see in the final?

You may not agree with me - so, take a look at the tourney -To take a shot you have to be given the ball in a position to score. How many shots did Gai take? Around 18. OVER 3 GAMES!! He should be shooting that EVERY game. He's not getting the shots because he is not getting the ball in a position to score. Take away from that 18 his offensive put backs, his 3 pt. attempts & that leaves you with @ 10 times he was given the ball in a position to score. Take from that the olley -oops, fast breaks and the just outside jumpers and that leaves his shots in the paint on a set offense: 3,4, maybe? OVER THREE GAMES! And YMM says he's not effective in the post. Anyone who watches knows that he works hard and is very active in the post.

Lots of terms being thrown around out there: "Go-to guy, selfish, it's all about the team, let him go,..." It's CRAP.

1.) There is NO "go-to guy". There are no plays to get the ball to a particular player - not to Gai. When you feel you should be a "go-to" guy, and being a "GO-TO" guy will help your prospects, and you're fighting an over-sized rotation for minutes and touches it can be very frustrating - to say the least. Because there are no role players, and ten key players, all want their crack, want their shots, minutes and numbers.

2.) Selfish- "it's all about the team" - How come when WE make decisions for ourselves, personal or business, its an informed, business-like, weighed decision. But, when a player believes he chances of providing for himself and family, in the very short window of time available to him, would develope better at a different program he is "selfish". Who is going to say he does not have NBA potential? Every pro scout knows who he is. Is there any other returning player on "the team" that has even a remote chance at the NBA? NO -But, it's all about "the team"? Are you or the team going to hire him if he stays with "the team" and possibly misses his opportunity - for the team? SELFISH?

3.) "let him go" Actually, it's not up to anybody posting here. But should be of major concern - keeping key players. If you don't care, just get used to FF working hard to break double digits in the W column again, PIG's, short stays in the tourney...

He's frustrated, I hope he works it out. I hope he stays. Nobody has a crystal ball, but whether he stays or goes, FF would have gotten a hell of alot from Gai. (national recognition - when's the last time a FF player was in the top 3 or 4 nationally in any category, let alone 2 years straight(except GPA) & who's gonna argue FF would have had NEARLY the season it had w/o him) And, FF would have provided Gai a great opportunity.
