Subject: A10/MAAC shakeup

Over on the new Siena board is mentioned an article by the Boston Globe about an A10 shakeup that would either create a new league or revise the MAAC and A10. Mentioned was a league consisting of Duquesne, HC, MC, FF, Siena, St. Bona, Marist, Fordham, Lasalle, and perhaps 1-3 others. Sounds a lot like the MAAC of old. If a new league is created, it would have to wait 3 years for the automatic NCAA bid. Would JS please provide a link to this article and his thoughts on it?

This proposed new league in the Globe doesn't strike me as much better than the MAAC is. Hard to believe we can't parlay our new arena into helping us get into a better league, particularly taking Fordham's place in this new league.

I believe the Big East is going to shakeout soon, with the football and non football schools parting ways. I would rather wait for that to happen before the A10 makes any rash moves.

I have always envisioned the following scenario - take the five Northeastern Big East non football schools, the three big Atlantic 10 state schools, and Fairfield and Siena from the MAAC since they are the only MAAC schools that have regular access to major arenas, and form a new, Northeast based league only, with no more southern or midwestern schools to cut down travel and save much $$$ for all schools. It would look like this:

Fairfield
Georgetown
Massachussetts
Providence
Rhode Island
St. John's
Seton Hall
Siena
Temple
Villanova

I would leave out LaSalle, St. Joe's and Fordham due to their small facilities and tiny gyms - only schools with access to major arenas need apply. No Xavier and Dayton, either - only Northeastern schools to cut down travel expenses.

I think it would work, but it's only my opinion.

It seems like we've talked about this issue many times over the years, and yet no changes have taken place.

As a Midwesterner, I'll selfishly disagree with Stagsfan's new league and suggest the following:

East
FF
MC
HC
Fordham
Siena
St. Joe's (I know its a pipe dream)

West
Xavier (Another unlikely entry)
DePaul
Marquette
Dayton
St. Louis
Creighton

I realize this this is extremely unlikely, but fun to dream. Think of the media markets in this league (Boston, NYC, Albany, Philly, Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Louis, Cincinnati.

I agree that this is a dream for a league, but why not a pre season tourney? If not, maybe an all Jesuit tournament. That might even make Father Kelley competitive about hoops. (PS: The west is stacked)
