Subject: Where do we go from here?

2 consecutive and unexpected losses (Rider) at the end of the season have unleashed a firestorm of criticisms here, and they ironically have come AFTER the Post article a week ago about the renewal of TOT's contract. Obviously we are all feeling upset over the recent turn of events, to say the least. But where do we go from here?

Anything short of winning 18-19 games at this point and FF fans will be calling for TOT's head (again). That means that it is EXPECTED that we:
1. defeat SPC and Loyola to finish season at 17-10 and hold
onto 2nd place in MAAC. Look out if this doesn't happen!!
2. win the first game in Trenton against a much lower
seeded team. Once again, expected. 18 win season is the
ABSOLUTE minimum. Record at 18-10.
3. Make it to semi's, will face tough opponents, likely
to be Niagara, Siena, or Iona. Tough call, better play
like we can play, or goodbye. NO NIT, NO Postseason.
Very angry fans!! TOT renewal??? Finish season at 18-11.
If we win, on to finals. Record at 19-10.
4. Get to finals, either against the favorite, MC, or
against one of the teams mentioned above. If we play a
good game and lose in a close one, with record of 19-11,
we'll have chance at NIT bid, maybe at home (see my
earlier posts). If we win, well, everyone will be joyous
in Stagland and we will have achieved a 20 win season,
the team's goal. TOT gets 3 year renewal. Time for a
dance against a top 10 team. Will it be a 30 point
blowout or resemble the near upset of North Carolina
about 5-6 years ago?

I like your rundown above. At the end of the day, I believe TOT should get a 3 year extension. This program is on the ups, and I believe that the next 2 years, at least, will be better than this one. The main gap is interior offense, with Oscar gone. Gai will get better, our freshman will get better and hopefully TOT can recruit quality players (I like this year's class and certainly Deng Gai). I don't want to start over, not yet at least. We've had many coaches, and none of them have been consistent winners, or even 500, in the last 25 years. TOT has passion, and hopefully somebody can push him in the direction of becoming a better game coach and strategist. They have won on the road this year and have won more close games than they have lost. That is something that we never have done, in my experiences with FF basketball.

I'd be okay with 18 wins this season, and anything else, like a trip to the MAAC finals or possible NCAA birth would be gravy. I predicted 15 or 16, so I can't complain with 18. We can complain, however, if this team exits early in Trenton, that is unacceptable. That's the only thing that will send me in an uproar (I am betting that we win at least at Loyola, and we should win in Jersey City).

[> [> Expecations for rest of season -- JoeStag, 11:40:12 02/23/03 Sun

I think the expectations are Clear

1. We end the season by beating St Peters and Loyola, and finish in 2nd place
2. We win our first round game in MAAC Tourney
3. We play one of the other top 5 teams in the Semis. We would be 18-10 at that time, and so will all our competitors (except Manhattan will be a little better). This will be the game that defines the Season. If we win, then everthing is gravy from there..... either NCAA or NIT.
If we lose, our season has turned into a disapointment after a great start. Bottom line is that Semi final game will be a great game of 2 evenly matched teams, and will come down to the last shot like yesterday.

If we do not get to step 3...... then all hell breaks loose (lol)

it would certainly be great for more than just 1 MAAC team to get a post season invitation (NIT of course), but it might be hard for Stags, Siena & also Iona to garner a few slots even with the expanded field, as most of the bigger named schools tend to gobble up those spots even with mediocre records..........so as always the focus is on getting to the Big Dance invite and then see what happens after that.

As for Stagal, he seems to have mapped out all the possibilities..............but I am sure he is also looking ahead to the future of FF, specifically with the loss of Ajou, Garcia & Delfico, leaves some holes for TOT to fill..........while Stags have some good solid frosh along with Gai, they have zero inside game to speak of and quality physical players are hard to come by at the mid-major level (Siena was fortunate enough to get Haddix early).........as well as Coach Saintly points out, your need for a go to guy/type scorer to take over games at crunch time has yet to emerge, nice to have balance but every successful team has that one player who has the ability to get it done when the game is in the balance. TOT should also harnass that wacky substitution pattern, it really disrupts the flow for FF.........is he trying to be like Hewitt when at Siena? Only problem there is Hewitt made multiple player subs because he exuded full court pressure/fast break basketball for 40 full minutes and guys needed a blow to stay effective.......rather than TOT just running players in and out for no apparent reason or strategy!!!!!!!

Just another outsiders view, but Stags are still very capable of winning in March, like a bunch of other teams, amid their short comings (heck every MAAC contender has them as well).......perhaps it's what makes this league fun for the fans, as the days of dominance ala LaSalle are long gone, but the push for the overall competitiveness is at least very trendy and of course needed for the league to survive!!!!!!!

: )
