Subject: 1,023 at SBA Double header

Well that was about 1,000 more fans that attended the Presidents day Blizzard double header in Bridgeport. The article goes on to say that the MAAC Tourney might not do that much better. Rider only plays about 2 games a year in the SBA, and as the 6th or 7th seed they will not draw many hometowners. The next closest MAAC Teams, St Peters and Loyola also will not bring many fans.

Bridgeport seems to be a more logical choice for a MAAC Tourney as the Stags have been able to draw 4K-5k fans for some Big MAAC Games, plus its more centrally located. Don't know if the 2,005 Tourney is locked up for Buffalo yet, because the sale of the Sabres/Arena might not want to pick up the big $ Guarentee that the old owners committed to the MAAC. I think the next open year would be 2007.

I caught some of the DH on TV and if there were over 300, people there, they were using the restroom most of the game. This upcoming tournament will further promote the impression that the MAAC is a mickey mouse league. Can you imagine a nationally broadcast final with 8,000 empty seats?

A Manhattan/Fairfield/Siena/Iona final may draw well but be prepared to have the MAAC Championship on National TV with next to no one in the seats. I was flipping back and forth last night between the Rider game and the Oklahoma/Kansas game and couldn't believe that it was the same Division (I). Now I know that there's a HUGE difference but I think the SBA is going to be a mess come that Monday night...

The big draw days will be Saturday and Sunday. Monday will have very few people in the seats for the championship. Even at the Pepsi, if Siena wasn't in it, the crowd size was rather small. I find it difficult to believe they will get anywhere near 32K, perhaps 20K+ is more like it. I have got to think that centrally located Bridgeport would draw much better in the future. If there is a lock on Albany in 2004 and maybe 2006, then we should try to get the '05-'07 games.

I think its a done deal, Albany in 2004, Buffalo in 2005, is already booked. The MAAC has stated in the past it won't go more than a year without going back to Albany , so that would mean Albany in 2006. So the earliest we could get into Bridgeport is 2007. Personally I’d like to see the tournament rotate between Albany and Bridgeport. Drop Trenton and Buffalo

Maybe the fianacial and ownership problems in Buffalo will force the Arena to reneg and Bridgeport can slide in for '05. The way things are in Buffalo now, I find it hard to believe they can make good on a pretty steep guarantee.

It is up to the civic leaders of Bridgeport to get the MAAC tourney at Harbor Yard. If they put their money where the fans' mouths are, Dick Ensor will have to listen.

Seeng the finals from Buffalo a few years back was embarrassing - this year threatens to look even worse. If the final match consists of any combination of Iona/Manhattan/Fairfield/Siena, they might draw 2500 - and that's the best-case scenario. Play the game at Harbor Yard and you'd see close to twice that (easily more if the Stags were there).

Might as well hold the tourney at the higher seeded teams' home court. Very sad - the quality of play in the MAAC FAR EXCEEDS the level of media attention and fan interest (Albany excepted)...
