Subject: Rider Loss - Major Postseason Implications

As many posters have asserted below - you can't lose this game. I stared at the box score and can't understand how we lose that game. If Kudjo didn't have another such a strong game, it appears that we wouldn't have even been in it at the end. Gai - 5 shots? I wasn't there, so I can't comment. If anybody was, if you could expand on what went wrong, it would be appreciated.

We were on our way to finishing at least second and making a strong case for an NIT berth, even in the scenario that we win 1 tourney game and don't reach the finals. That dream is over. The only postseason we will see is the NCAAs if we win the conference tourney. We lose too many games to teams which we should beat, and at HOME!!! I still don't know what homecourt advantage the Arena brings us - the results should tell you (and for all of you who can't read - I understand what it does for recruiting). No excuses, both teams had the same situation. I still don't think we know are own rims very well.

Let's hope for a strong finish, and not look past St. Peters and Loyola in anticipation for Niagara, who I think is a very good club.

Time for another closed door players-only meeting. They have to go out 3-0... and not just win but win going away.

I think the real Fairfield showed up today. An unorganized bunch who really had no plan to win this game. TOT really got outcoached and Deng Gai was a no-show. It's time to take the picture down by the way. You can put a picture of Gai's only bucket up. An omen of things to come in the tournament.

Too bad it closed up. It was my favorite.

I'm down in Florida, and went to a sports bar to catch the game on MSG (no problems with the feed down here). This was painful to watch. We came out about as flat as you can possibly imagine. It was 8 minutes into the game and we had scored 2 points! Credit Rider for taking us out of our game - they switched off from playing man-to-man to playing a 3-2 zone, and doubled everything that went inside. Yet what do you think we continued to do...that's right - force it inside, and then either turn it over, or more likely, force up a bad shot. I haven't looked up the box score, but it looked like Rider was getting every rebound. Gai would go up for the block, the shot gets altered, and Rider is standing all alone on the other side of the basket waiting for the rebound.

The intensity just wasn't there, and I have to tell you, it was amazing that they were still in this game at the half. The only reason they weren't down 20 was because Rider couldn't hit their shots. The defensive intensity seemed to return with about 12:00 minutes left in the game, and we starting chipping away, getting turnovers, chasing down loose balls, etc. We just had no offensive flow unless we were in transition. Once we went to a half court set, with Rider saggging down low, we had no one to hit the outside shot, with the exception of Kudjo, and we struggled. Through a bunch of transition points, we came within 2 and then Kudjo tied the game at about 52-52 with somewhere around 3:00 left, and it looked like we were gonna survive. Jerry Johnson then hit a 3 and we had to keep clawing. Another 3 by Kudjo tied us up, but the killer came when Johnson had the ball in the corner with about 1:30 left and was open for a 3. Tyquan came flying at him and got called for the foul as Johson's shot was an airball and very short, so it appeared it had to have been a foul. The replay showed Ty never touched Johnson, but such is life, and Johnson proceeded to hit all three free-throws. We then turned the ball over on our next possession and Rider went up by 5. We just could muster the comeback from there, although we had a chance to tie it on the last possession, and then Kudjo forced a drive into the lane, lost the ball, end of game.

Bottom line, we dug ourselves a hole we couldn't get out of. We didn't have the intensity, and if I'm a MAAC coach, I throw a zone at us the rest of the way through. TOT better start working on cutters to the top of the lane, and start creating some movement in his offensive sets. This was ugly basketball!

Good recap. Coaches didn't know what to do. Good post players can also set screens for shooters against a zone and O is not the only good post player on this team. When you look at Rider's D across the lane, you have to really wonder why the coaches couldn't have run some simple overloads and a backscreen or 2 to pin the D down with the big boys they have. Shots would've come for the guards. Oh well...
