Subject: Game Intro Obnoxious

Don't know if this has been covered here yet, but I feel the intro of the Fairfield players at Harbor Yard is obnoxious. We're not a professional team...we're struggling to be a mid-major college team. As a Fairfield Alum, I was embarassed.

What is the thinking behind the intro? Are other schools at our level doing that, and if so, who?

DM,

I have somwhat similar reaction to the opening Introductions; however, I have both likes and dislikes:

- I Like the lights dimming
- I Like the video clip, its cool, and I think players/recruits must like it too.
- I do not like that it takes so long from the lights dimming to the actual introductions.
- The music is OK, but its not standard Hoop Music. Does not get me pumped for hoops. The standard Jock Jams stuff would be more appropriate. I know I am an old fart, but back in my day, they played When The Saints (Stags) come Marching in..... that was not a hip song then either, but it was Basketball music. I am NOT REMOMMENDING When The Saints (Stags) come Marching in as the music, but some standard Hoop music from Jock Jams would be better.

But a bigger concern of mine is that fans do not stand up during introductions, Good plays, or Senior awards. For some reason people do not want to stand up. I used to during introductions, but got very little support (goes to show how apathy can be contagious). I would recommend that the announcer says after the lights dim...... "Will everyone please rise (pause) and great you Fairfield Stags".

I would also recommend that we always have a singer do the National Anthem..... I appreciate a good performance. And I would also give some thought to starting a tradition and have the person sing God Bless America..... instead of the National Anthem.

All due respects GOSTAGS - I find this dimming of the lights with Queen playing atrocious. This is not NBA basketball. Question, do they pull this nonsense at the final four? I don't think so. In addition, if I was a player, I would want my name called out, position, number, year with the lights on and in a professional manner. I am begging TOT to ban these "bells and whistles" and announce the players with some class. Jesus Christ, you think we were UNLV in the old days.

I agree, I think it is overdone. I also think other schools can't wait to beat us after seating through that intro. It is a net disadvantage for the stags and frankly none of the fans I have talked to seem to really like it. I do like the professionalism of what is done and the video is good, they need to find a way to condense the presentation, its just too long.

DitchMitch, JoeStag, Reindeer Fan,
The intro is 30 seconds...the song came directly from the team, they wanted to be introduced over that music...I personnally think it's a good use of the video boards at the arena...I can see the point made that not many schools do this and this isn't the pros but I also think it could help add to the overall atmosphere of that place.....I wonder though that if nothing was done you might be complaining about the fact that the arena/Fairfield U doesn't do anything to get the fans excited prior to introductions....which is what the video/lights dimming is supposed to help accomplish...I can't comment completely with an objective mind because I am involved in making these videos happen....I do appreciate the feedback as I am always wondering...is this working?....any ideas?....shorter version- 15 seconds? better/different music...not at all? I'd be happy to entertain them for next year.
Thanks

Dude, the intro is good technically, it's a decent video, etc...but it's just silly to blast music and all that stuff in a half empty arena (on a good day). Whatever, the intro music is the least of the problems with the arena/gameday operations, etc, from what I hear.

Steve,

Do the promo and introductions only last 30 seconds? Really? It seems like we seat in the dark 30 seconds just waiting for the music to start. Then I feel like the promo is 30 seconds and the introductions last about another 30 seconds after that. Anyway, I don't want to appear to be too nit picky, of all the things to complain about this is not on the top of my list, but as long as someone raised the top, I wanted to voice my agreement. I do think we would be better served to cut back the duration a bit. It seems very long when you're sitting in the seats.

it's actually under 30 seconds before the player intros begin and then there is a pause before Mr. Fitz intros the players...I understand your point and when the crowd is sitting during the whole deal it can seem and does seem longer...I think the current format can appeal to kids or at least get their attention away from the Stag mascot for a minute or two....I will no doubt keep your thoughts in mind for next year...with a packed house this type of intro should send the place into a frenzie...hell, I'd settle for everyone standing before the 1st hoop (UCONN)...anything just to pump some excitement into the place and the fans....the first years was 45 sec/ this year 30/ maybe we take it to 15...or we scrap the "Vegas" as Menzies says and just plain read the names....once again, thanks for the input- I think it's good to hear from other fans as to what else we can do to make the overall "event" better.
Thanks
Steve

Steve,

Lots of recommendations were listed here, but I feel that the dimming of the lights and Video are great...... not many schools can do that, we can, so we should exploit that.

The common message is that the time between lights dimming and the introductions is too long.

But the the bottom line is that if Fans are not going to Stand up, Clap and Cheer during the video or introductions..... then much of that whole presentation has lost its effect. Maybe as soon as the lights go off the announcer says "Would everyone please rise and great your Fairfield Stags" ..... IMO, people want it to be a livley expereince, but they do not want to be the leaders to make that happen..... well maybe the announcer, or Music can help make that happen.

Steve I share your vision that the lights are dim, the music/video are playing, and People are standing up and cheering...... but we don't have to wait for a large crowd or students to be there for that to happen. If the current 3,000 fans did stand up and cheer, then it would be a great introduction. Somehow We (all Fans) need to make that happen.

I like the intro as it is presently used. Its effects are a dramatic precursor to the game which is to follow. Were I to make a suggestion it would be that the volume of sound be decreased. With the loud explosions I sometimes feel that I'm an unwilling participant in a battle of some kind.

Steve,

I'd also like to say "thanks" for your positive responses to some of our constructive criticism. It's nice to see someone at least willing to listen, which is all you can ask for.

I'm sure the intros are a matter of personal taste, but it is interesting to see the responses to my initial post. The bottom line is trying to get the FU players/fans excited, and do it with class/respect. Hopefully, we're on our way to achieving the pefect mix.

Also, if they insist on keeping the lights out thing, shorten it, too long.

They do the same for the women's game, with about 30 people in the stands. Embarrassing, and a waste of time.

[> Re: Game Intro/I like it..it's the low-key 'fans' I could do without.. -- StagHer86, 17:53:24 02/20/03 Thu

I think that the reason the intro looks 'obnoxious' to many is that it isn't in line with many of the 'fans' who prefer not to clap, stand up, yell, or show any sort of enthusiasm for their Stags! It's strange, I can hear plenty of negative comments when the Stags are flat, but I hear no applause, or positive comments during the introductions or during the game. IF the fans were into the game more, and stood up as the Stags were announced, clapped their hands, and whistled a bit, then maybe the intro would not seem to be 'too much'. I like it, as does my son. It's cool...JMHO...
