Subject: If we were to pick a MVP today...

my vote would be for OSCAR. He has been IMO the most consistent player, has a nice move under the basket to get the high percentage shot, a pretty tough rebounder, and much improved over the past years. Who would you pick???

Its hard not to pick Deng Gai for MVP, because of his defensive presence and defensive personality that he gives us. He is definitely our top player and top scorer. But I use the the more "pure" definition of MVP...... the player that we need most on this team to win, and I think thats Nick Delfico.

We have been in a lot of tight games this year, and been behind in those games, and IMO, Delfico has been that person that has held this team together, and has made key plays to turn games around. Beyond the shots, rebounding and his hustle, he has always played his best when the team looked like it was going to lose it or fall apart. And Delfico does one thing better than anyone else on this team..... he moves well without the ball, and keeps the offense moving by passing the ball.

Sometimes, you don't realize who your MVP is until you don't have that player anymore. I feel its no coincidence that Delfico only played 13 minutes, and that was one of our worst games. Granted, Delfico did not play well that game, he was in serious Foul Trouble all game, and we missed his Leadership with only 13 minutes and Fouling out.

Garcia, would probably be my third choice for MVP, as we lost without him at Charleston Southern, but won without him at Fordham.

I would agree with Stagal. Oscar has been the most consistent player and one of the only players who is willing to battle under those boards. Agreed, Deng Gai can get nice blocks, but half the time he looks like he doesn't even want to be on the floor. There were numerous times in the past few games where he was caught standing around without even a hand in the air. Oscar gives teh team direction. When he is not on the floor the rest of them seem lost. He has come a long way over these past four years and definitely deserves the MVP award.

Garcia gets my vote. He is also a vocal leader.

Deng Gai is my choice. He normally shuts down the other team's inside game which is huge. Just think how even more ineffective our press would be without him protecting the basket. I have nothing against Oscar, he is a good low post scorer who doesn't rebound, can't defend and makes very poor decisions when double teamed, resulting in turnovers. My second choice would be Terrance Todd. He currently has hit the wall a little bit, but he is one of the biggest reasons we are a better team this year; He makes everyone better.

Rave

You are all wet, Red can make the entry pass , and he graduated.
Oscar can speak Spanish and he does the up and under.

Rave, you are a master of "damning with faint praise". "I have nothing against Oscar who is a good low post scorer but..."

Although consideration could go to Oscar, Nick, and Terrence, there is no doubt that Deng Gai is the most important player the Stags can put on the floor. The truth is without his impact we are probably no better than a mid level team in the league, at least to this point. However the fact that there are at least four in the discussion exemplifies the point that there have been many different people involved in our successes ( and also failures). In short, it has been pretty much a team effort so far!

One consideration in choosing Oscar over Gai was that Gai has not been with the team from the beginning. Yes, he has definitely made an impact since his return, but as Puma wrote in his article a while back, Oscar and Nick are the real glue that has held this team together and have shown Senior leadership.

not MVP. If you were to poll the coaches in this league and ask them what Stag would you like to have on your team, I think the answer would be a unanimous vote for Deng Gai. Nothing against Oscar (although I think Rave's assessment is a good one) being an emotional leader and battler are certainly very important, but you never hear other coaches wondering how they will "shut down Garcia."
