How 'bout dem Stags at 5-0!!!!

*tap tap* We're still here, though, at 4-2. No shame in either league loss, at your place on a questionable call (let's not go there again!) and at Siena.

Seems that MAAC fans have a top tier of Manhattan, Siena and Fairfield, and then everyone else. Well, I believe that Iona's on top of that "everone else" group, and probably no more than a shade behind the leaders, given our game with you, our 5-point loss to Manhattan on a neutral floor (see Siena's smoking at the hands of the Jaspers), and our good effort vs Siena Friday (lost by 10 but had the lead with 6 to play). If we want to be considered a contender, we'll have to beat Fairfield.

Man, that sounds odd. :-)

To give you the gist of what to expect from us, well, you saw us once and we're not too different. Only thing is that we might look more comfortable than we did that night as we are now used to life without Jenkins. Without Jenkins, we've been a little thin up front (didn't you guys get like a million offensive rebounds vs us at Fairfield?), but generally we're playing better than we were when we met--as are you, I gather, as now both Dengs are getting rather comfortable.

I would guess, Vegas-wise, that Iona will be a slight favorite, maybe 2 points. This would be based on reputation more than reality. In reality, I think you guys should be slight favorites.

For us, a lot of our chances will ride on whether what few big men we have (we have 4 frontcourt players: Fields, Smith, Waschmann and Henson) can stay out of foul trouble. We've played a lot of three-guard look this year out of necessity, so we've suffered some on the boards but have piled up the assists and therefore have shot well from the field.

This should be a good one, and it's important for both teams. Iona needs to prove it can contend by holding serve against a good team at home. Fairfield, with tougher games at Siena and at Manhattan on the horizon, needs this one to keep the wins coming just in case of struggles in the next couple of outings.

Let the fun begin. :-)

I would think both teams would be better cause the Frosh now have a half season under their belt. The addition of Deng Gai makes our interior defense better than the first game, but I expect Iona to go at Gai to try to get him in Foul Trouble. The last few teams we played (Canisius, Rider, Loyola, and Yale) decided to shoot from the outside as Gai blocked the first few shots.

Stags are without Michael Bell (remember him), and that hurts our outside defense as he would be a good matchup with Soliver. I would also expect Dewitt Maxwell to play more and match the athleticism of Steve Smith.

Stags have been playing some good "D", and if they can bother the Iona on the perimeter that would give Stags the advantage..... with Goode and Todd being a key here. If it becomes more of a running game, or more of an offensive game, then I think Gaels have many more offensive options, and their big men run the floor well..... especially Henson, who usually kills us.

If Stags stay close the first half, I feel that we have the composure to pull out another road game. But I think Ruland will have his team focused as a Big game.... because of the first games result, and because we are 5-0.

Iona will come out hard and pissed off after what happened in the last game. They will come right at DG, and try to pound FF on the glass, just like they did last year. If DG stays out of foul trouble, and the other big guys step up, which I believe they will, FF will win, a close one. A lot of the easy layups and garbage points should dissappear this time around for Iona.
