Cruzing@FU, as a former C.C. runner and team captain at F.U., I've monitored Fairfield's progress and lack thereof through the years. I have spoken with Mr. Doris about the state of the program and have written letters both to him and Fr. Kelley. Someone once said that the squeaky wheel garners the most attention and I was hoping that my persistence would bear fruit. In each case both Mr. Doris and Fr. Kelley were diplomatic in their responses to my concerns and indicated that the university had no plans to increase funding. Were others to come forward with letters and calls, perhaps the administration would not deal with the C.C. teams in such a cavalier manner. I think that I am the only individual making any noise about this and this lack of response from others only fortifies the position of those making the decisions.
For the university not to provide you with running shoes is scadalous. I would suggest that you and your teammates ,as a group,(both men and women) meet with Mr. Doris. Also write letters. Make these people understand that you are not going away until action is taken that will benefit the program. Good luck!
I know something of Iona since my son was offered a track scholarship there. The school has always relied on Irish runners. Its repeated, concerted efforts to attract Americans have met with only limited success and that's the reason for its reliance on foreign athletes. I suspect that Providence recruits foreigners for the same reason.

Thanks Runningman for your support.
I actually graduated last year from Fairfield, I ran for 4 years and 3 different coaches. As a team we were very grateful of the parents and past alumni who wrote and who made calls to Gene for us.
But lets face it, our program doesn't generate any revenue, and there for will never be much support for the program. It sad to say but I gave up on the program after my freshman year when our coach quit because of the lack of funding, and the failed attempt of a track & field team. It got even worse when our second coach came in. By the end of the year we were coaching ourselves, and by the end of my junior year, it was just understood that the captains ran practice. Even after all of this nothing was being done, I wasted two years on the team. Finally in my senior year we got a coach who we all respected, and followed. But when it came for increases so we could afford better equipment forget about it, nothing could be done.
Nothing worse then watching my housemate (from a top tier team), throw on brand new $100 plus "training" shoes to run around a track a couple of times. What do we get? We receive only $60 towards our practice shoes, and then expected to cover the rest of our costs.
After watching the program (not just us but Im also talking about several of our sports team) ignored year after year, you just come to realization that nothing will be done to change anything.
Now I'm not saying that we should get money like the rest of the teams, but come on, let me run in some decent sneakers. Add a $1000 towards the teams budget so we can get something decent. I even wished that Fairfield would pretend like they actually cared, but they dont even do that. I can honestly say that the only person over there who actually gives a damn is Allison Sexton. (assit AD, she does a great job)
But I feel sorry for all of the coaches for almost every team. Very soon each one of them will realize that they are fighting an uphill battle and for what? The great pay that Fairfield gives them? Fairfield has made it quite obvious that they wont support certain teams, and has made it even more obvious that they arent going to even try.
Running man again, I honestly appreciate you trying. And I just wrote this post to let you in on whats been going on and the perspective from a former athlete.

If the school is going to have a program, then it shouldn't embarass itself by treating the athletes with such a low budget. Don't know if calls to Doris will do much but can suggest that any donations to the school be made to the Lyons-Lademan fund and marked expressly for the Cross Country program.
