It’s sad reading these posts about the state of the basketball program at NU. I remember posting regularly to these boards during the JAM era, arguing with those that criticized his coaching and saying that he was “holding us back”.
Boy, look at how far we have come. While we at least a significant present in a fairly dangerous mid level conference, now we are insignificant in a fairly insignificant conference.
Really a shame that it’s practically impossible to follow NU from afar. Every single player is new and I expect every single player next year will be as well. You really can’t even call this a student activity anymore. It’s simply free agent amateur ball.
The University’s neglect, coupled with NIL and changing transfer rules, has made for the perfect storm to ruin college basketball at the mid and low tier level.

No question, Niagara basketball has fallen a long way since the days of JAM...and isn't it unbelievable that he was criticized by some when he was winning all those games for the Purple Eagles?

Factor in NIL and the portal and you have the ruination of college basketball across the country. So why do I still follow Niagara basketball? I guess because I've been following it too long to just let go, but it is becoming harder and harder to follow, much less enjoy. I'll be watching in early November when NU takes on Houghton in the season opener but it won't be with much anticipation of an exciting year to come...it'll be just out of habit.

Those of us who missed the Murphy NCAA era and the Wingate NIT era and a schedule of good Eastern college programs and suffered through the Raskin era and the NEC Conference knew it was special to be in the NCAA's again. The MAAC was also a good conference with Iona and Siena being NCAA calibre teams as well.
Yes, the NIL and portal make low/mid majors somewhat untenable. Anyone showing talent or potential wants to
move up. NU's seemingly disinterest in sports exacerbates the situation.
A previous poster mentioned, though, that at least by marketing and promotion you could make the games fun to attend. Minor league baseball, D2 and D3 schools do it. Some JUCO programs do it. You would think with Holzschue being an ex-player he would carry some weight in making sports more relevant.
I get posts from NU that we spend money on lacrosse, soccer, bowling and swimming.
Why not reduce men's sports to basketball, hockey, golf and baseball and women's sports to basketball, volleyball, golf and softball and give those programs the little funding that
we have.

Finishing 3rd in MAAC Commissioners cup and having 3 MAAC champions does not constitute a lack of interest in athletics. Women were MAAC champions in swimming and lacrosse and you want to drop those sports? Think you need a minimum 7 men’s and 7 women’s sports to remain in Division 1. Athletic department raised over a million dollars in donations and had their most successful year in Olympic sports ever. Maybe the athletic department should be praised for what it has accomplished with limited budgets.

What score card of success could be made for basketball and hockey?

Results?
Attendance?
Community engagement?
Student engagement?
Faciltites?

There are back up players who make $1M a year in NIL. So raising a million is cool but not as amazing as it once was.

Please advise successes in the major drivers for the two flag ship sports.

There were 400 people at the hockey home opener.
