I was wondering about that. My theory is that he, as many did, took Y2K as an opportunity to drop out, and that he's underground in Mexico somewhere stocked up and lying low. He probably assumed that the Net would be no more as things as we know them collapsed.

If this is the case, I'm glad he was wrong. I love the Net and think that it may well be the thing that saves us as a civilization. I do think he's right on about things changing progressively faster. Adaptability will be the key to surviving and prospering, in my opinion.

I've always tried to subscribe to the principles in a book called How I Found Freedom In An Unfree World, especially the ideas about concentrating on the things you can control, and insulating yourself against the things you cannot; And to otherwise try not to worry too much about all the bad stuff that's going on over which you have no control. That's why I've never been much of an activist.

I think theo took those ideas to an extreme because of his perception of how quickly, and to what extent civilization was going to hell in a hand-basket. I share his philosophy, but probably have a much more optimistic view about civilization. Part of this opimistism is because of my agreement with you about the power on the Interenet. I think it may well be the salvation of civilization and of liberty. But I am an optimist.

Theo's course may well have been the most prudent one, although we are still here, and it's already nearing the 2nd month of the new millennium. The stock market is hitting more new highs and everything seems rosey and unflagging in the world as we know it; I think, though, that's what makes me most nervous.

Being an optimist, I hope and suspect that Brother theo will be back. He'll eventually run out of Dos Equis and dried pineapple and want into go town for supplies. Maybe he'll notice a TV through a window and see that the world's still here.
GF
