TIP NUMBER ONE:

You should ALWAYS walk the course before you ride (in a show). Spend at least 15 minutes walking the course before you ride it. Get it in your brain. Remember where you will have to turn, your approach, where to change leads, etc..

TIP NUMBER TWO:

You should see how many strides you have to get in between the jumps (ie the lines, combinations, etc). A horse always needs one human "stride" (which is really a step of walk) to land right in front of the jump. To figure out how many strides in a line, take one step away from the jump, count 1 2 3 4 (that's one horse stride) 2 2 3 4 (that's two horse strides) 3 2 3 4 (that's 3 horse strides) 4 2 3 4 (that's four horse strides ) and so on. Then when you get to the other jump, leave one step in front of the jump so they can leave the ground and jump. That number you've got (say it's a 3 stride line) is a HORSE SHOW 3 stride. You can do a FORWARD 2 stride (or fast with 2 strides in there) or a COLLECTED 4 strides (or slower with 4 strides in there). Quite a simple concept once you think about it, it just takes a bit of practice :-)
