Wrong Number Will Cost Gateway Millions
Computermaker Lists Wrong Number For Complaints

Poway -- A Florida jury has hit computermaker Gateway with a $3.6 million dollar damage verdict.

The verdict is for a wrong-number listing that flooded another company's toll-free telephone line with calls from thousands of Gateway customers. The Florida company Mo' Money claimed huge losses from being unable to receive its own customers' calls.

In January 1999, someone at Gateway erred by incorrectly using the 800 prefix instead of 888 for the computer company's toll-free customer complaint line. The wrong number was distributed to more than 100,000 Gateway customers.

Mo' Money said it contacted Gateway, based in Poway, California, six days after the calls began. The lawsuit claimed it took the computermaker more than two years to track down and fix the problem.
