WASHINGTON D.C. (OFU) - President George Bush inadvertantly told Saddam
Hussein to "disrobe or be dismembered" at a speech before the McKinley
Society, a conservative think tank. The President apparently meant to say
"disarm or be disarmed."

Asked about the gaffe, White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer said, "If
the President said he wanted Saddam to disrobe, then the President meant
what he said, and Saddam should disrobe."

Other White House staff had differing explanations but all sided with their
boss. "He was speaking metaphorically," Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfield
told reporters. Condileeza Rice suggested the press had "mis-heard" Bush,
while Colin Powell said, "The President's statements were accurate."

The Iraqi government was conciliatory. Foreign Minister Tariq Aziz said
Saddam Hussein would disrobe if it would stave off war. Aziz then
questioned Bush's sanity, saying the U.S. President seemed to have an
unnatural obsession with Saddam Hussein and probably needed psychological
help.
