I, too, don't know whether Mr. Paulsen is a reliable source on this topic. But I do know that he was loved by PY to the point that he accepted him as his disciple; which is a big factor in my evaluation of the situation.

As to kechari, I don't practice it. However, I too am aware of the video and booklet that Ananda sells regarding how to practice the technique. I've made plans to purchase these materials, but haven't gotten around too so far. I probably will because it goes with kriya, if you know what I mean as to the teaching of the throat and what one does before one practices the technique.
Kechari would just be an extension (no pun intended) of this practice, and has been part of the yogic teachings for ages, as has both mahamudra and yoni (jyoti) mudra.

But you have a good question. I would guess that SRF would say, as this question has come up on other boards and people have asked the monks, that SRF is teaching kriya the way that PY taught it. One just has to go with what feels natural and right, that's my position.
