To a enlightened sage there is awareness in anesthesia, before and after death. But of course you have to believe in his words or can you suggest an experiment to disprove that? When there is no body or in anesthesia case there is no experience, only pure conciousness(awareness).
If you can show me how a material thing like the brain can produce consciousness, i will of course accept conciousness is dependent of material processes.
