Subject: Yogananda's "unenlightenment"?: epithets and interracial marriage

In the L.A. News of Oct. 25, 1939, Yogananda explains why Self-Realization Fellowship ousted member Nirad Ranjan Chowdhury: "He [Chowdhury] married a white woman, which is directly forbidden in our laws."

Yogananda then goes on to characterize Chowdhury (who was suing both Yogananda and SRF) as a “dirty chiseler.”

As unfortunate as these remarks may be, there seems no independent reason for attacking their authenticity. Newspapers usually quote sources accurately, so any given quotation is at least presumably correct. Moreover, neither SRF nor Yogananda requested a retraction (as far as I can tell). On the whole, then, the most reasonable conclusion is that these quotations are accurate.

[Note: The above submission should not be seized upon by Yogananda’s competitors and/or detractors; the fact that I do not provide unflattering evidence of other gurus gives no ground to infer that Yogananda was any worse than they. If anything, this sort of thing should give pause to all devotees of all faiths and practices.]
