Secondly, Br.Nerode himself was of mixed blood....his father was Indian and his mother American. So, I don't see anything 'inter-racial' in this, except that he was not "100% white".

So the quote about 'marrying a white woman' is very likely to refer to the California state laws, which prohibited "100% whites" from marrying anyone, who did not fit that profile.

Whether or not he was a 'dirty chiseler' is besides the point.
