In 1931 California would not issue a marriage license to Nirad Ranjan Chowdhury (later Sri Nerode) and Agnes Spencer. They were married in Gallup, New Mexico. (I have the marriage certificate). Marriage in Gallup was reported in several LA papers(I have the newspaper clippings. ) California officialdom did indeed refuse a license in California, since they were not discriminating at the administrative level between dark races. What the law says and how it is administered are often quite different. The Yogananda marriage ceremony for them was carried out slightly later by Yogananda to "show the flag" on the Mt. Washington lawns for Fox Movietone News and various Newspapers (I have the Fox panoramic picture but not the Newsreel). This was widely carried in papers here and in India, and in the Movie houses on the next Saturday.(I have the newspaper clippings, domestic and Indian.)
