Ontologically, I don't think religious experience means anything. While it is real, it is not experience of something real. (In that respect, it is like a dream.)
It's probably relevant to posts that appear above this thread that dream states, as with meditative states, are attended by distinctive neural activity. So there is no more reason to be impressed by MRIs of a meditator's brain than by MRIs of a dreamer's brain. MRIs record neural activity; they don't verify the existence of the objects of experience.
