First of all, many scriptures in India teach it as Hong-Sau. I've heard that at the end of his life, Muktananda began telling people that it was Hong-Sau rather than So-Hum.
Secondly, Yogananda taught Hong-Sau breathing through the nose, not the mouth.
He did teach Kriya breathing through the mouth, until one is able to practice Kriya with Kechari Mudra. Then he said to do Kriya through the nose, since you can't breathe through the mouth while practicing Kechari.
Do all the other Kriya Masters teach Kriya breathing through the nose?
Finally, since Yogananda was a Master, he could teach it any way he wanted! It does work when you practice Kriya as he taught it. I can testify to that. And many others can also.
