Simply put, manifestations of one creature through another, but only in part. It is only possible in humanoid races, though. Everybody is potentially a were, but only the creatures fierce enough to fight their way through to the surface- such as a wolf, bear, or dragon- will be able to make the change. They usually come through in a very feral manor.
If it comes through fully, it is known as a Transition. Going from one creature to another entirely when one possesses no shapeshifting abilities. It is a rarer ability, but it is only possesed by weres- regardless of whether or not the second creature will manifest or not. In this sort of change, the first creature will have control of the body, rather than the second creature.
A Shift is a complete transition to another creature without the were ability or a shapeshift ability. In these sorts of changes, the second creature takes full power, and usually chooses the times in which it comes through. This ability is generally the result of a curse, but it can not effect humanoid races. That is why so many are interested in your friend Vincent- he more or less stomped all over the thin line between what is possible and what is not in the world of shifting, in more ways than one.
~*~*She sighed, and looked up as the dull white world began to change again.*~*~
~*~*You saw Psyke this time, as a child. There was something different about this, though- you were seeing the 'reality' behind his life. Rain and Mystique were there, as was his family. However, there were two noticeable differences in how this memory should have run. Rain and Mystique, you now knew, were Moon Children who were supposed to keep him alive until Vanyel and Kerowyn came about. You now saw Mystique as a milky golden entity, and Rain likewise in silver. The other difference was that you could see a red light showing through the heart of everybody who had been killed as the result of the wars in the faerie worlds. Each and every relative of his was marked. Psyke sat in his mothers lap, at about four years of age. The memory quickly warped back to the Temple on your world, where you saw Eiaon pacing back and forth in the main hall. Somebody appeared there, in the same manor that you had done. Liam, most likely- and then there was a swirl of darkness over the manticore, before its eyes turned to a glowing red, and they both left the temple. The memory returned to the family, where Psyke's mother was running down a hall with him in her arms, before giving him to Rain and Mystique. You followed them down the hall as the mother turned back, as the remaining three ran through a Gate that sent them to what appeared to be Ashavar. You thought that you heard a scream just before they left.*~*~
~*~*Upon emerging, you saw Naoki wandering off into the woods- in a scene from the memory in which he had watched Luce become a god. The memory flashed forward about ten years to when Psyke was fourteen. He has gotten his Talisman from Mystique then, and had learned to use it under her care. It seemed to you that he had already been put through most of his magic lessons from his 'guardians' as well. They were no longer in Ashavar- a silent thought of 'twenty-eight' told you exactly how many worlds he had already been forced to run to. There was a silent rustling in the bushes to one side, and with the first sighting of Eiaon, the number went up to twenty-nine.*~*~
~*~*It was over fourty when he arrived in the Mystic Planes at the age of seventeen, shortly before he was nearly killed by an Ash Phoenix. You learned then that it was Psyke who did not allow his guardians to move him away again. The memory ended, and returned to being a white void.*~*~
~*~*She sighed.*~*~
...I believe that Cye has finally gotten to him.
