Hello Brother, welcome home,
I was also in the AF and volunteered for Freedom Hill. I had only been in country about 4 days when I went up to the Hill. July 1970. I stayed my whole tour. Never spent another night on the Base. The first 6 months it was under control of 3rd MAF, the second 6 was under the Army 24th Corp. I really liked working with the Marines. No drugs, just short timers, waiting for the freedom bird to take them
out of there. When the Army took over it was a whole new ball game. We had butter bars in charge. Just out of college and putting in their mandatory time. They were dope smokers and most of the army draftees were the same. By the time they took over I was a Sergent and considered a long timer. I almost ran the place. Got off guard duty after about 3 month up there and went to driving truck. Went for mail and movies every couple of days. Took the guys to the Air Base for breakfast and up to 1st Marines for Sunday steaks. We would eat across the road at the Sea Bee's for most meals. The Sea Bee's were gone by the time you got up their and most of the marines were gone too. We would confiscate the booze that the Marine's tried to buy
then trade it back at the back door of their food service for a case of steaks. We would then have a BBQ about every other week. We had Bob Hope there for Christmas eve. All of us working on the hill had front row seats. He had his own security. When we had guy get shot "accidentally" as drive I would have to haul them to the hospital. Many times it was in the middle of the night. We used the hospital
located between the Hill and 1st Marines compound. I had a M16 with blooper that the AF issued me but I always carried a chrome plated 45 and a sawed off 12 gauge. The cowboys were more afraid of the 12 gauge that the M16. They knew we couldn't shoot the M16 but were not afraid to open up with the 12 gauge. With a whole year up there I could go on for a
long time. Again welcome home.
