Justine,

Your Civil War poster may be an original mounted on wood, or a replica (check for any info on the back of the frame). It is a Civil War enlistment incentive poster, whereas enlistees would receive $400 cash on enlistment, but zip if they were drafted.

Other such posters offered up front bonuses and an additional cash payment when the enlistee shipped out from point of enlistment. These posters were unique in they were designed to raise a unit by a township or more likely a wealthy man wanting to be ‘elected’ captain or colonel of that unit (depending upon how successful he was). The ‘colonel’ would outfit and equipment the entire unit.

In your case, Brevet Major General John P.C. Shanks, was Commanding Officer of the 7th Indiana Cavalry, 119th Regiment (1863-1866). You can read more at: http://www.indianacavalry.org/7th/home.htm
