Bob

Check out official air base attacks for the top ten at

http://www.airforcehistory.hq.af.mil/Publications/fulltext/air_base_defense_in_the_republic_of_vietnam.pdf

Of course there were countless unofficial mortar attacks but 1 July 1965 was the first stand off mortar attack and 15 aspires that penetrated the ARVN perimeter, blew up several C130s and F102s. SSgt Terance Jensen was KIA during a fire fight and received the Silver Star. A NVA pow later captured claimed that when an Airmen (Al Handy) opened up on them they thought they had encountered an unknown MG and broke off their attack. Had they continued the next bunker to receive a satchel charge contained 25 air crew members whose names are not on The Wall.

If you have a date in mind let me know as I am in contact with dozens of airmen who were at Da Nang as early as 1962 as advisors with MAAG.
