Roger was with the 334th Assault Helicopter Company (AHC), 145th Aviation Battalion (AvnBn), 12th Aviation Group, of the 1st Avn Brigade (Bde).

He was piloting an AH-1G assault helicopter (tail # 66-15301) on Jan 31-1968 (1st day of TET) when they took heavy small arms fire on the left side, killing him. The copilot, Major Ronald E Gray took over the controls and landed the helo safely.
