Howdy Rea;

It's complicated. Prior to 7/20/54 (when the French signed the Geneva Accords), the Vietnamese communists and nationalists were called the Viet Minh. After that date, the country was divided at the 17th parallel and the Viet Minh in the north became the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) and the Viet Minh in the south became the South Vietnam National Liberation Front (SVNLF) which was also called the Viet Cong (VC). If an U.S. POW was held in North Vietnam, then he would have been under NVA control. If he was held in South Vietnam, then he could have been under either NVA or VC control since both types of units operated there. The VC, however, were ill-equiped to take and hold prisoners, but I have heard of some rare exceptions.
