I served as a medic in Vietnam starting in December 1967 until August 1969, first with the 101st Airborne Division at LZ Sally mainly. After which I was reassigned to the First Cavalry Division at An Khe and then Phuoc Vinh. Over a 20-month period, I was aware of a few isolated incidents of pot smoking. That is hardly extensive drug use in my opinion. As my brother-in-arm succinctly stated, we were all dependent on each other to get through the war in one piece and that meant staying alert and sober.
