Howdy Donna;

Yeah, I was correct in guessing what "VA-56" stands for. It is a Naval attack squadron with the nickname of "Champions". Their website states that they have served onboard at least half-a-dozen aircraft carriers. After a tedious process of looking up the histories of those ships, there are only two possibilities for LT Shank's ship; it was either the USS Enterprise (CVN-65) or the USS Midway (CVB-41). There were other aircraft carriers rotating in and out Yankee Station during Operation Linebacker I (the mining of Haiphong harbor in mid-1972), but either the VA-56 was never assigned to them or the ones that they were assigned to at some point in their history were elsewhere on 7/23/72.
