Howdy CPL Joshua Erb;

Thank you for your service. My nephew, SGT David Northridge, is currently in A Co., 1st Bn., 5th Marines. You seem to be convinced that the person that you mention is a wannabe. Well, that happens from time-to-time. From a name, you could check the Military.com website to see if he has ever served in the military although not much information is available there except for rank, branch of service, and MOS. You could also check the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), but information on individuals is extremely limited for the general public.

In general, a wannabe will screw up somewhere by claiming to be in a unit which never existed or to which they were never assigned to or claiming medals which they were never awarded. [All citations for the two highest awards (the Medal of Honor and, in the case of the USMC, the Navy Cross) can be checked.] If you can determine which unit that the person claims to have been in and what time period that he claims to have been in it, then you can check with the veterans of that unit to see if they know this guy.

I haven't the slightest idea if the person that you are referring to is legitimate or not. However, from my personal experience, most combat veterans are quite modest and don't beat their own drum no matter how many medals they've got.

Ex-SGT Jeff Northridge [B Co., 2nd Bn. (Mech), 47th Inf. Rgt., 9th Inf. Div., 12/68 - 8/69]
