Howdy Jenn;

SGT Guffey Scott Johnson's Army Serial Number is RA 226506377 (which means that he enlisted and the numerical portion is probably his social security number since the Army switched to them exclusively after early 1969). His MOS was 57H40 (Cargo Specialist). He was born on 6/15/39 and his hometown of record is Independence, VA. His tour of duty in Vietnam commenced on 3/11/71 and he was assigned to the 264th Transportation Company, 394th Transportation Battalion, 5th Transportation Command, 1st Logistical Command, MACV. He was KIA on 10/31/71 in Quang Nam Province due to "Non-Hostile, Ground Casualty, Intentional Homicide". SGT Johnson's religious preference was Baptist, he was married, and his body was recovered.

Quang Nam Province is in I Corps where Da Nang is (see http://www.nexus.net/~911gfx/vietnam/maps/nd49-01/nd49_01a.html ). "Intentional homocide" means that your father was murdered by somebody who was not an enemy soldier. There should have been an investigation and a report of the incident, but I don't know how to get a copy. Try asking the Department of the Army; in particular and since your father was an enlisted man, try the Office of the Command Sergeant Major of the Army first--they will be able to tell you how to proceed.

As a next-of-kin, you may request a copy of your father's Army personnel records and a set of replacement medals (if necessary) from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). See http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/get-service-records.html for particulars. The only homepage for the 394th Transportation Battalion that I can find is at http://unitpages.military.com/unitpages/unit.do?id=106458 . They have 61 members on their roster, but only one of them has dates of service which include 1971. In general, support units are much more poorly represented on the internet than combat units. I don't know why, but that's the way it goes. In any case, good luck!
