Howdy Julia;

SN Gilbert James Graham's Navy Serial Number is 1389896 and his component was reserves (which means that he must have enlisted at some point since the Navy hasn't drafted anybody since WW II). His MOS was SN [Seaman (E-3) which is equivalent to a PFC in the Army]. He was born on 2/24/46 in London, Ontario, Canada, but his hometown of record is given as Anaheim, CA. His tour of duty in Vietnam commenced on 5/20/67 and he was assigned to PBR-6100, River Section (or Division) 513, Navy Task Force 116, USNAVFORV (U.S. Naval Force, Vietnam?). [Note: PBR = Patrol Boat, River = "tango boat" as opposed to a PCF = Patrol Craft, Fast = "swift boat".] He was KIA on 9/28/67 in Vinh Long Province due to "Hostile, Died While Missing, Ground Casualty, Artillery, Rocket, or Mortar". SN Graham's religious preference was Protestant (no denomination), he was married, and his body was not recovered.

This is one of those rare cases in which the individual was originally listed as MIA, whose body has never been recovered, and who was subsequently presumed dead (or KIA) on the incident date of 9/28/67. Also, EN2 Joseph T. Musetti, Jr. was KIA on the same day, was assigned to PBR-6100, and was also listed as MIA originally. I think that these two are related to the same incident. TF-116 was part of the Mobile Riverine Force (Brown Water Navy and 2nd Bde. of the 9th Inf. Div.) which was headquartered at Dong Tam, but I think that 1967 was a little too early for that.

You might like to read some of the tributes to SN Graham on the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial Wall Page at http://thewall-usa.com/ (there's one from his sister and one from someone who served with him). You also might like to check out the Mobile Riverine Force Association at http://www.mrfa.org/ and for photographs of the Delta circa 1969 see http://www.gingerb.com/vietnam.htm .

Ving Long Province is in IV Corps where the Mekong River Delta area is. The province lies to the south and west of the northern-most distributary of the Mekong River which is called the Song Tien Giang or the Song My Tho depending on how far downstream that you are. For 1:250,000-scale maps of most of Ving Long Province see the 1st and 2nd maps from the left on the bottom row of http://www.nexus.net/~911gfx/mapnc4807.html . I hope this helps and I have other tricks up my sleeve, but I don't know how much time you've got. Best wishes on your academic studies and good luck!
