ABC, WB unveil fall skeds Tues.
By Cynthia Littleton
LOS ANGELES (The Hollywood Reporter) --- ABC and the WB Network have placed their fall series bets in preparation for their upfront schedule unveilings Tuesday.
ABC is expected to add two new comedies -- the Jason Alexander starrer "Bob Patterson" from 20th Century Fox TV/Touchstone and the untitled Jim Belushi family comedy from Touchstone/Brad Grey TV -- and at least three dramas: Steven Bochco's "Philly," Touchstone's "Alias" and Warner Bros. TV's "Thieves."
"The Runner," the elaborate reality series produced by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, also is expected to be on the fall schedule, possibly in varying hour and half-hour configurations on different nights.
There also was talk of midseason orders for the Peter Tolan comedy "The Web" and the Sally Field-led ensemble drama "The Court."
ABC also has renewed all three of its midseason comedies: Damon Wayans' "My Wife and Kids," Joan Cusack's "What About Joan" and Denis Leary's "The Job." Freshmen series that didn't make the cut include "The Geena Davis Show" and the critically embraced medical drama "Gideon's Crossing (news - Y! TV)."
ABC's fall scheduling plans were still murky Sunday, with the big drama centering on whether the "Wonderful World of Disney" Sunday movie franchise will move possibly to Friday or be tabled altogether.
The WB had pretty much nailed down its schedule by Sunday. After losing "Buffy the Vampire Slayer (news - Y! TV)" in a bidding war with UPN, the WB is exercising its option to hang on to the spinoff "Angel." But in a surprise scheduling move, the WB will move "Angel" from Tuesday to Monday at 9 p.m., behind the WB's top-rated "7th Heaven."
"Buffy's" former 8 p.m. Tuesday slot will be filled by the sophomore season of the widely praised dramedy "Gilmore Girls (news - Y! TV)," followed by the WB's hottest development property, Warner Bros./Tollin-Robbins' tales of young Superman in "Smallville."
Wednesday will again lead off with "Dawson's Creek (news - Y! TV)," while "Felicity" and Miramax/Warner Bros.' "Glory Days," the new offering from "Dawson's' " creator Kevin Williamson, will rotate during the season in the 9 p.m. slot.
The Thursday 8 p.m. hour, home this season to "Gilmore Girls," will be revamped with the return of reality show "Popstars" and the dating game show "Elimidate Deluxe." "Charmed" returns for its fourth season at 9 p.m. but without star Shannen Doherty.
Friday again starts out with "Sabrina, the Teenage Witch," followed by three new sitcoms: Warner Bros./Touchstone's "Maybe I'm Adopted," 20th Century Fox TV's Reba McEntire starrer "Deep in the Heart" and Paramount's "Raising Dad."
Sunday offers reality shows "Lost in the U.S.A." and "No Boundaries" from 7-8 p.m. "The Steve Harvey Show" anchors a male-skewing 8-10 p.m. sitcom block filled out by Paramount's buddy comedy "Men, Women & Dogs," the return of "Nikki" and Warner Bros.' odd couple comedy "Off Centre."
The WB also has given a midseason order to the Warner Bros. comedy "The Young Person's Guide to Becoming a Rock Star," based on a hit British TV series.
Gone from the WB's schedule are the dramas "Popular" and "Roswell." UPN has considered picking up the latter, but there was no definitive word on its fate as of press time Sunday.
