The colt is used to me so we're already comfortable with each other. We start be going out in the round pen. I let him sniff around it, then snap the lunge line to his halter, ordinarily, for colts, I have to use a chain (under the chin), but he's well behaved.
Instead of a lunge whip I use a long thin fiberglass rod/stick with a flag on the end.
I walk him to the rail then step back to the center, telling him "whoa" when he tries to take a step towards me, gently nudging him back to the rail with the rod.
I tell him to walk firmly. He takes a step forward, and I tell him again. I have him walk around the pen a few times nudging him back to the rail each time he tries to come towards me.
