Yet I would be willing to bet that you would be a fool to think that no self proclaimed athiest has ever done this.

A lot of people change their religious views radically throughout their lives. This I know.

It is possible that it can certainly work the same way for those who have an absense of religious views as well.

"I believe in God"
(everything is fucked up)
"I don't believe in God"
(everything is even more fucked up)
"I believe in God again"
