There are two things you must also factor in though. In my reference to say that the "light at the end of the tunnel" is the birth canal, that is to say that those who actually experience that light are the ones about to be reincarnated immediately. Not all are reincarnated immediately though. Some must wait for a specific time depending on the condition of their reincarnation.

The second thing is that you also must factor in the "all things that live" factor. Humans, animals, plants, all life has a spirit. Human spirits are more advanced than plant spirits, however, that doesn't stop a human from reincarnating as a plant if a lesson must be learned (I'd love to see how those who cut down the rainforest fare in the next life!)

Many creatures are extinct, and many die every day. Sometimes the Gods must take from one to give to another. Therefore, numbers do not factor in. I could understand that if you were only counting the human race, but we choose not to limit ourselves in that way.
