Subject: performance parts for my 3.8litter v6 firebird

I want to add horsepower and speed to my car but I can not find a chip, computer, super charger or any kind of performance parts. I don't want to get into switching motors and I don't want to have to invest too much money. Summit Racing told me good luck because no one makes performance parts for a 3.8litter engine. Help. I'm trying to race it next spring.

you might also want to look into changing your differential gears, a 3.73 would be a good ratio for your 6, maybe even a 4.10, it sounds excessive, but 3.8s arent known for their torque, since torque is what gets you moving, you might as well so the next best thing... a gear change.

well, some s10 pickups that had 4 whangers came with 4.10s, rip them out of the pumpkin and go to a shop and have them stick them in. i don't recommend setting up a set of gears in your garrage, not a good idea

try edlbrock, i dont know a website but they cant be too hard to find, they have an ad in every car mag on the planet. i know they make parts for 4.3 and 2.8 litre 6s, so they might make one for a 3.8. also try comp cams (www.compcams.com) they might be able to custom grind a cam for you. i hope this helps, if you need any further information feel free to e-mail me (badcam_83@hotmail.com)

take a look at some of the stuff at www.thunderracing.com They have some intakes and exhusts n'stuff for the 3.8. Try to find a local speed shop that will do a port and polish for you! Altogether, you should be able to get up to 275 horses, without a supercharger. If you want a supercharger check out http://www.ftforce.com/V6_camaro_supercharger.html they have a supercharger for your car good for up to 90 HP!

hey i had the same problem but its not that bad. pace setter and rk sports makes headers for a 3.8 camaro and they fit on the firebird. K&N makes a cold air induction but its pricey. any speed shop will sell peaces of 3 inch polished intake in almost any angle for very cheap.any cat back exaust system off a v8 firebird will fit on a v6 even the muffler check on e-bay for other parts i saw a supercharger for a v6 for about $150. hope this helps

hey guys i am a 3.8 fanatic if u guys r serious about power you need to go to some buick grand national sites look for grand national engine blocks and all that stuff then got to www.intense-racing.com for your heads cam etc the thing left to do is get the grand national manifolds most used blocks come with them if not just search grand national performance parts. they have all the stuff needed aftermarket turbos etc.intense can flash your pcm so no error codes will set and still pass inspection in some states. the only thing left is to determine how much power you want and whos car you want to stomp good luck guys 3.8 fiebird for life.also try thunder racin for suspension like kmember.

thunderracing.com is the only way to go. They seem to be the only ones that carry a large selection of performance parts for the 3.8, I can't even find a nitrous kit for this engine.

I just happened onto this threat while searching for some performance exhaust components for my Firebird, but for what its worth I know that Vortech at least USED to make Centrifigual Superchargers and intercoolers for the 3.8 Liter, but you really have to drop some cash to get one. Beyond that, I'd advise auction sites. Believe it or not, I've seen supercharger kits that will fit the 3.8 got for a grand or so on Ebay. Good luck.

it'll run you over 3 grand, but if you really want a supercharger go to: ftforce.com and click on the v6 owner icon under the picture.

What do you know about a Flowmaster exhaust? I race in autocross, and I want to stay in the stock division, but still gain some horse power. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Mate i had a Holden Commodore 1990 model weighing in at 1300kgs(2860pounds) which had the Buick V6 3.8ltr and i went through the same dilema being that i wanted more kws(hp's) and i found that the cheapest solution to this was to fit a Blower. I sent my car down to Melbourne to have it fitted which included:- piggyback computer management system, water injection, bigger injectors, cold air induction, intercoler, two blow off vavles and the blower its self. The blower was set 9psi and with all the otehr goodies the output was 250kws(335bhp)from 127kws standard and yes it absolutley hammered. All this cost me around AUD$5000.00 so US$ you should be able to half it or just do some shopping around. I know that a Vortex blower which is made in the US is compatable and i,ve seen a few guys over here use them. My blower however was Australian made unit its called an STA(Supercharger Technology Australia)for mine its the best one on the market with the only down side being that its a little bit noisier than the others but is twice as reliable. My 3.8ltr was only at stage two by the way and there was another stage avail though it wasn't going to be very practicle so i didn't bother , though i belive it was go for over 400hp. Another alternative that i,ve recently seen here in OZ that a lot of poeple are now starting to do is bolt turbo's on. I don't know a great deal about these yet but from what i've heard there extremely quick, if not quicker than the stage 3 blower application. Anyway keep seraching as there's always something you come across or something you hear about that can point you in the right direction. Oh by the way you can get cams for these motors and they sound like V8's afterwards thats if you put an exhaust on at them at the same time. The cam alone should give you 30hp.

Till next time

By now

Matt

i am just wanting to know what the highest hp you have heard of on a firebird with a 3.8 is? i am debating on getting a new engine and tranny if it wont compare, unless you have any other suggestions that could save me the time and money. i am just looking to get all the power i can out of this 3.8 but if there is no point i am just going with the new motor and tranny. Any ideas?

If you get on kazalite and do a search for buick grand nationals you will see some 3.8s doing amazing things ,try 1100 hp on the dyno!! I am on the search like you for all the right parts.I know it can be done.I have personaly seen a grand national pulling close to 500 hp with only a single stock turbo.Stick with the 3.8, I have heard that its probably the best engine GM has ever made.

Good engine or not, aftermarket manufacters just aren't making much for them because for each and every peice SOMEONE has to make the initial investment on designing and producing it.They
don't know that there ARE people looking for these products or they just don't think there are ENOUGH of these people to dignify there time. Remember: they are in business to make a profit.Period. My sugestion for you would be A) pay for the design/production of these product to an applicable company B) start your own company making said products (which would require doing suggestion "A") or C) Get all the 3800 owners looking for aftermarket products to e-mail ,call ,talk to , whine to and petition these aftermarket companies and show
them that there is money to be made here! ... the latter probably being the cheapest solution ;)

Anyway, good luck .Personaly I will hopefully be trading my Firebird for a Trans Am and a real aftermarket soon =(

I have a 98 3.8 firebird & I ordered a supercharger kit
(6 psi) from RK Sport, Because I drag race. 6 PSI is the highest you can go without having to repace your rods, ect. It gave it some torque. in the 1/8th mile I get up to 105mph. Maybe you should think about that a lil bit. My dad's a mechanic(and drag racer) so he helps me out on this sort of info.Got any questions, ask away. . .

ok heres what i know summit has very little but they do have stuff. lmperformance thunder racing slp are the biggest. but your best bet is go to performance parts makers sites find part numbers and then go to your local speed shop (after all they need the bissness more than the online guys do) i know that msd makes coils for it part # 8224 i installed them on my car and WOW. its an easy 5-10hp and if you want a really good ignition they make modules for the coils to connect to a dis 4. i am currently looking for internal engine parts.

For the V6 Firebird 98-02 there is almost absolutly nothing aftermarket wise to put on your car, ive thought about the V6 to V8 engine swap but i priced it out and it was close to 15,000 your best bet is to go and get a turbo a cold air ram induction thing,an 80 mm throttle body, and some new headers and a dual exhaust system.
