Lois, the circuitous sophistry of the leaders who created the Community of Christ make long digressions to avoid plainly stating that they do not believe that there is any such thing as truth.

In order to derail the church from God's guidance, the leadership has endeavored to convince people that because God does not usually speak directly to men using human language, but through direct commmunication, that the information He provides is a mish-mash of "concepts" that the recipient of the revelation must supply words to describe. As such, only someone extremely brilliant and well-educated in theology is smart enough to really, really figure out what God is saying. Despite the fact that in many cases, the scriptures report that God spoke directly to man in audible speech issued from the mouth of an entity represented as either being God, or God's divne representative, the Community of Christ continually insists that God does not actually speak in any way that is direct or concrete. It insinuates that revelation is actually more akin to Descartes inventing analytic geometry out of his own head by watching a fly crawl on the ceiling above his bed.

However, my analogy here is poor, because analytic geometry has propositions that are rigidly defined and structured; they cannot be ignored or bent, merely on the grounds that Descartes lived in a century that never saw an automobile, or an all-male revue.

Here is an example of truth as preceived by people of like mindset with the CofC.

My daughter's former boyfriend has a brother who is homosexual. Yesterday the brother sent her a text which said:

With the legalization of both gay marriage and marijuana at the same time, we can now fully understand the Old Testament. When the Bible says, 'If a man lie with another man, he shall be stoned,' we never really interpreted it correctly until now."

This is the desired result of the groundwork that has been laid to denigrate the value of the Bible. The Bible is treated like the patriarch of the family, who is honored in the presence of others, but at the same time apology is made to strangers that he is senile. That way, if he should call the police to report that his bank accounts are being plundered by his relatives, the police will not respond, because the old man "is not all there."

That is how specific instructions in the Bible that are very definitely applicable today are ignored by those who follow the CofC First Presidency.

When I read "1984," I never thought that the process depicted in Orwell's novel would also manifest itself in the Christian church, but it has.
