Subject: The metaphor of "the Journey"

The Bible states that in the beginning, the church of Christ was not referred to as "Christians." (Acts 11.26.)

At first, Christians were called "followers," because they followed the "way that leads to life eternal."

In an attempt to recapture some of the spirit of the primitive Christian church, some modern denominations have revived the terminology, speaking of the "journey to discipleship," etc. This would be a correct place to start.

One word example disturbs me, though. The term for "follower of the way," or "wayfarer," is also "viator." One who leaves the "way" and goes off on a side trail would be called a "deviator." One thing needs to be set straight in the new buzz words of theology -- a certainty that the formulators of this theology have not unconsciously become "deviates" by jumping the track. We are to have absolute faith in the Way, not in human navigators.

Tough situation.

George
