Subject: The Ryan Bacon Show

After a lackluster,depressing first half in which the Peacocks managed only twenty-two points and trailed by nine against an unimpressive LIU squad,Ryan Bacon led the charge in the second half ,which saw SPC score an amazing 47 points on their way to a ten point ,much needed ,victory.
Were it not for Nick Leon's eleven first half points SPC might have found themselves in an even deeper hole.
In the second half however,Dunne shook things up a bit by replacing Traore with Hall in the starting line-up. The three guard offense clicked and together with Bacon's rebounding(15),the peacock transition game took hold.The team looked the best on the run with good ball movement.
The Brandon Hall maturation process continues at a steady clip--8 pts including 2-3 long range-5 more assists and ZERO turnovers from the point. Does anyone remember Mike Frensley? One of Brandon's threes came with Wesley on the bench and LIU switched to the zone-very steady--very impressive. And to think ,Loyal,we almost lost him to Felecian. Good under the radar get for the staff.
But getting back to Bacon,not only did he rebound well,but he finished inside with 9-16 for 18 points and topped that off with 5 blocks.
Nick Leon had his third double figure half in a row and had ,team highs in assists and points with 6 and 21 respectively.Nick was effective mostly, finishing his drives.
Wes chipped in with 11 on a night that again saw him blanketed defensively.He also grabbed five boards from the 3 spot.
This was a much needed win. LIU was a game that we should have won and we did.It will be interesting to note whether we will open up our game more on offense or revert back to "shortening the game" as has been suggested recently.
Tonight also, Traore's minutes were,diminished.Was it a result of match-ups,or a move toward more running in the three guard system? If we are to do so,we'll have to continue to get great board work from the two up front-Bacon,Gooding,and Costner in relief as well as Wesly from the 3 spot.
Did anyone notice that St Francis beat Manhattan tonight?

As good as we were in the second half we were that bad in the first half. The difference, as Cindy pointed out, was JD's decision to go smaller and up tempo the game. Difficult choice to make with a short handed bench but IMO definitely the way to go.

Most of our players are over matched in the half court game. No many how many picks and screens are set (and there were quite a few) for Jenkins and Leon the other teams bigs just jump out to help their guards. Bacon became a different player in the second half when the team opened up. Ryan is an outstanding off the ball player who has a nose for the ball. Just about everyone of our players runs the floor well and we are just a different team when we open it up. Think this was the style of play JD wanted before the season began. Sure we are playing with a shorter bench (Lampley,Shumate) and there will be games that we will be blown out but tonight showed that a smaller, quicker team is the way to go.

Just a brief mention of Hall who played even better than his pretty good stat line indicates. Made a crucial 3 in the second half and often found the open man. Finally, we are a poor free throw shooting team which almost buried us tonight in the first half.

First half was as bad as it gets. Second half was better I think for a few reasons. Mostly Bacon, Gooding and Costner played ANGRY. I think that's different from playing hard. Angry means that you have that killer look in your eye.Ferocity. Second Hall must get more responsibility. I don't think it was accidental that as Hall played better, Leon played better too. I still think Leon is a backup at 2 spots for a good team, but this isn't the time for a wet blanket. Note that as soon as Jenkins was out LIU went 2-3 zone. Man defense when he was in. A wing shooter is a must unless as has been stated Wes is the 3 but that only works if Leon can handle the 2 well enough. Gooding has to play with this ferocity all the time in order to get to places where he has a chance to score ie not the perimeter or anywhere near it.A needed win, but let's see if progress continues which is my measuring stick of the staff

Analysis of Oldtimer and Figgy is on the mark.
Free throws are so essential if we are to compensate for other shortcomings .The 51% we shot was worse than that because many were front ends of 1 and 1s.
I am in firm agreement with the 3 guard set. On the current team it also puts our five best players on the floor at one time. Playing longer together will also make Bacon,Gooding,Jenkins,Hall,and Leon a more cohesive unit, and hopefully the whole will become better than the sum of its parts.
We will be smaller than other teams but our quickness will crate match up problems for them also.
Sure we'll get blown out in some but it might afford us opportunities in other games.
Re the intensity issue. While playing hard in every game,last night was the first time I also,detected any sense of urgency and intensity.
This team needs leadership,to ignite that intensity, which must come from personality as well as skill. Who will it be?...Bacon,Jenkins,Hall??

The pick and roll is the designed play that you suggest but as posted after the Wagner game there is no respect shown for our bigs on the pick and roll. Traore and, at least for now Hill, do not pose anywhere near a threat on the pick and roll. Traore, although he tries, often walks or fumbles the pass. Truth be told Bacon is also much better in the open court. With another big who is a threat (next year?) the way to free our guards is the inside/out game that another poster suggested. Lehigh did that all day against us. Meanwhile let's enjoy the win and Happy Thanksgiving to all.
