Subject: Raul Orta

Stepping aside from the JD debate for awhile there have been several posts that have alluded to Raul ranging from his lack of senior leadership, failure to play aggressive offense, to the coaching staffs inability to design plays for him. All totally off the mark. So here are some facts:

Before his latest injury (broken nose) Raul scored 19, 15, 18, 7 (Rutgers), 12, 6, 17 (Seton Hall), 8, 18 (Providence), 11 and 16. After the injury he has scored 0, 8, 2, 7, 7, 4, 5, 7, 6, and 4. In addition, he's gone from a 50% three point shooter to a 30% one. Watching him the last few games Raul's not only missing the basket but often the rimm. That shield that he wears is making him a completely different player. Think JD was counting on Raul big time this year as a stabilizing influence on the young freshmen. Most early plays were designed for Raul and he did have some great performances. Winning basket against Wagner, a great exhibition of three point shooting against Seton Hall, excellent game against Providence... He was our best shooter and his loss has hurt the entire team.

Yes he shot better before the injury but he still was not taking enough shots to make much of a difference. He scored more points because he had a tremendous shooting pct.but he was only putting up 8 or 9 shots per game. His injury is just one of many problems this team has and none seem to be getting any better.
