I have a number of close friends who are SHU season ticket holders.I was told that they felt in Orr's final year when the team turned it around and made a run to the NCAA tourney that Orr turned the game planning over to Dunne. They all felt he was a very good X and O coach.
That said it's hard to evaluate at SPC when you're playing essentially 4 scholarship players last year and 7 freshman this year.
I agree with Loyal above that biggest indictment of Dunne is no improvement seen from the team over the course of the year. In fact an argument can be made that Orta definitely and Sowell possibly were better as sophmores under Leckie than they look now.No question Todd regressed last year but has battled back this year to his sophmore level of performance essentially. As to Raul he was better befoe the injury but still not as good as the player who helped us make the run in the MAAC tournament 2 years ago.
As to the players who left the team from last year no question to me the biggest loss was Kevin Spann. An argument can be made that he regressed from his form at the end of his frosh year as well when he was truly outstanding.I know that KiKi on the team made Spann.Sowell and Orta better no question but these players just looked better more confident and had more of a free wheeling less robotic look than they did or have had under Dunne.I dont know if thats all coaching or other ciecumstances. I'll leave that up to the others here to debate.
Lastly, how much better would this team be offensively if we still had Owes as well as Spann here ,both of whom could score and frankly were much more athletic than Leon and much bigger than Lampley.I don't know and doubt any of our regular posters here truly know the circumstances involved in those defections but they are part of the reason for the 10-44 results to date.
At this point let's see how they finish this year. I saw much better ball movement and harder defense yesterday than i have in a while this year.Maybe we can get 2 or 3 more wins though it looks like a longshot at this point.Biggest dissapointment, does anyone realize we probably go all season without a road win this year. This despite being right there in position to win at UMBC,Lehigh,LIU,Manhattan,Providence etc but lack of a go to guy to seal the deal.
We need definite help at the 1 and 5 spots with the last two scholarships and hope Gooding or Hogga develop into the 3 spot.I thought Akeem really had a fine effort yesterday and made some mid range jumpers which change everything for him.
I don't feel we should make a move with the staff this year as SPC Alum states above. I'm willing to give them another recruiting class to bring in more talent and see how the current crop develops. If as Loyal says above no progress is shown by late next year than a new AD will have a decision to make unless the administration ties his hands with 3 remaining years.
