Subject: Think board should cut to the chase and stop dancing....

...on the outside of the firering of the issue. Men's Basketball occupies a unique and critical focus for the well being of the oldU. The balance of the various athletic programs are important parts of the total picuture but none refect, so accurately, the overall health of the institution. The ability of the Head Coach to coach or the players to play well is really secondary to the practical viablility of the school to sponsor a successful and diversified major college athletic program. There needs to be a major attitudinal seachange by the Board of Trustees and Administration otherwise we are just whistling past the graveyard. I am not asking where the $400,000 that was saved by cutting Football has gone as the answer is obvious. It's wonderful to think great thoughts, ie let's build a new Student Center, but that seems faulty logic as you can't maintain the physical plant that already exists. Management should glance at the RLC and attached parking deck in the daylight as proof of the failure of their current position. The existant policy, demonstrated by the powers that be, would seem to be somewhat to akin to ignoring the hemorage because we have a swell bandaide with improved adhesive to slap on the problem. It is well past time to address the issues in a realistic manner. It is not acceptable for the current President to pay lip service by expressing his desire to have a competitive athletic program and then fail to fund it at a level that will allow the coaching staffs and athletes a reaonable chance to succeed with that position. If you cannot fund it at a reasonable level then it is REALLY time to re-evaluate maintaining it at all; although the administration has already made that decision de facto. R.I.P. .......Heck, we will always have the '67-68 season.

Seton Hall is playing Louisville tonight on national tv in front of 9,000 fans in a beautfiul new arena. Tomorrow St. Peters is playing in front of maybe 800 fans. And to think 40 years ago Elmardo Webster and Hharry Llaurie were kicking the butts of John Suminski and Kevin Foley. Not right.
