The presentation began. Signas started to leave the auditorium. He turned to look back at X. He motioned for X, and IO to come to him. Zero looked over, but Signas motioned for him to remain seated. Zero just shrugged, and returned his attention to the presentation, "The History of Maverick Conflict."
Mega Man X, and IO came over to Signas. Signas put his hand on IO's shoulder in a gesture of commeradery. "IO, X, Walk with me." IO looked at Mega Man X, who made a facial expression like, "I don't know." Signas and IO started to walk down the hall. X followed a few paces behind, with his arms folded across his chest.
"What is it Signas?", IO asked. Signas' hand was on his chin, with his other holding the elbow. "Well IO, I was just thinking. We're going to have to rely on you quite a bit for this next mission. What I want to know from you is...do you think you can handle it?" IO was taken back by the question.
"Sir, let me assure you that my skills exceed your requirements.", IO defended himself. "Let me make myself clear, your skills are not in question. It is more your character I am worried about."
"Why do you say that?", IO asked.
"Well, when you came to us, your mind was clouded with revenge. For the time being, you have remained calm, but you also haven't tasted many battles. Do you think that when it finally comes down to the battle, you will remain calm?"
"I understand his question.", Mega Man X added, "He's curious about your potential to become a Maverick!"
"A Maverick!?", IO felt a cold shudder. "Mavericks killed my master. Then, when his wife fled for safety, they killed her too! Only I was able to escape both the attack on my Master's space lab, and the fall of the Sky Lagoon. You think that I'm going to become that which I hate the most?"
"No IO, we don't think you'll become a Maverick. That's not what I'm saying.", Signas replied. "But, I was just thinking... rage clouds the mind. Hatred for the Mavericks has turned many of the Hunters against us! Our rules, and restrictions suddenly become too confining. They lash out at everything, and everyone! I would hate to see that happen to you."
"It will not happen to me. It is not in my system to do so."
"What do you mean?", Signas asked.
"You may, or may not know this about me, but I exist in a dual state of mind. When I move to strike, I change to my attack mode. I am lethal, ruthless, and efficient. My master designed me to be so. But, I am not without mission protocols. One such protocol is to minimize civillian casualties, and collateral damage. When I'm being attacked, I go into defense mode. I can only exist in these two states. My master's wife designed my defense mode. It works, not by integrating into my attack mode, buy by coexisting with it. She couldn't get the two programs to merge, so she created a go between. That is the reason I was named IO."
"IO is a moon of Jupiter."
"Yes, but thik about it this way. The I represents a one. The O represents a zero. In the language of binary code, 1 is positive, and 0 is negative. That is how my system works." Signas looked at X, who was intrigued. "Does that mean that you have a weakness in your system?", Signas asked. IO shook his head. "In a way, I do. I can only be damaged in attack mode. My defensive shield is too strong. Quite possibly nothing can damage it. I don't know, because I haven't had the chance to test it. But in theory, it can prevent any attack. However, when I strike, I cannot be in defense mode. This is the only flaw with my dual nature. Once I'm in attack mode, I have only a few moments to strike, otherwise I risk being vulnerable. So, I try to strike before anyone knows what hit them. Then I revert back to the safety of my shields."
"Fascinating. But how will this prevent you from becoming a Maverick?", Mega Man X asked him.
"Simply put, in my defense mode, I've been given a rage dampener. It is impossible for me to become angry in this state.", IO answered.
"Yes. But the danger lies in your attack mode then. Does such a dampener exist in this half of your system?", IO asked. IO thought long and hard before answering.
"I guess I never thought about that. No, My master did not provide me with a rage dampener for my attack mode, but I have been given an anti-virus program!"
"So had Mega Man X.", Signas told him. "Listen, this is serious business IO. We need to know if you can handle this assignment. If we can't rely on you..."
"I know Signas. I won't be any good to you."
"So what do you propose we do?", Mega Man X asked Signas.
"Come with me." Signas answered. (Coming up next...Another test!)
