Signas was joined by Mega Man X, and Zero. X, had asked if IO could join them, and Signas had permitted it. The meeting was being held in a highly classified chamber, deep underground in the Maverick Hunter HQ.
"Where do we stand Signas?", Zero asked. He decided to get right to the point. Signas understood, and did not delay in answering him. "We have at present 1,138 active troops, and 47 more on standby.", he said.
"Why so few?", IO asked, "I had heard of much higher numbers!"
"Since the Hunters were established, we've been in one battle after another with the Mavericks. Not to mention Repliforce, and of course Dr. Doppler.",X explained to him.
"Yeah IO, we've really been taking a beating. Alot of our guys can't handle the pressure. They either snap, and become Mavericks, or just die out on the battle field.", Zero added. Signas nodded, "Our most recent case was a Hunter named Squid Adler."
"Who?", IO asked.
"He has alot of different names. I've heard him called Bolt Kraken, Volt Kraken, even Squid Adder.", X smirked.
"Who was he?", IO asked.
"An old friend of Launch Octopus. He had been with us since the beginning. Up until a month ago, everything was fine. But oneday, he quit, just like that.", X answered him.
"It is important that we keep a fair number on reserve, just in case a fourth conflict errupts. I don't want our fingers in too many pies.", Signas cut in. "I think we should scale back the active number of troops to nine hundred."
"Do you think it is wise for us to scale back the number of active Hunters, given our current situation?", Mega Man X asked. Zero said, "Three hundred each? That's a nice round number. I think we can manage."
"That's what I had in mind.", Signas replied. "Actually, I was thinking of sending a few extra out on each of the outbound teams. This would include laborers, and repair technicians. Just in case something breaks down on you, I'd hate for you to be stuck without help."
"That's a good idea.", IO said with enthusiasm.
"Ok. Fine. But which one of us is leading what attack?", Zero asked. Signas answered. "I will be heading the security around the HQ. Mega Man X is going to lead the team that occupies Dr. Doppler's island base. Zero, you will lead the space mission to the moon. It will require some shuttle piloting, so if you're a little bit inexperienced, it will be a good time for you to get some practice."
"I can handle that.", Zero huffed.
"Good. You leave in the morning. I want both of you to get some rest.",Signas told them.
"Sir, what about me?", IO asked. "Where am I going?"
"You are going with X to destroy Dr. Doppler."
"But what about my mision?", IO asked him, "Doesn't that mean anything to you?"
X and Zero traded looks of concern with Signas. Finally, Signas told him, "IO, Sigma is dead. I know he's come back in the past. He might come back soon in the future. But, for right now he is dead. Our intelligence is the best in the world. If he's alive, someone will tip us off. But nothing has happened so far. So for now, concentrate on completing this mission. Besides, you never know! You might run into him where you're going. The last time Doppler started stomping around like this, Sigma was behind him pulling the strings. "
"So, he might be alive?",IO asked.
"Who can say? All We know is that you have been given this assignment. Do you accept?", Signas asked him, in a commanding tone.
"Yes Sir."
"Good, then you leave with X tomorrow morning. Make us all proud IO." (to be continued)
