Wave Tortise provided a way into the island's interior for X, IO, and the 17th unit. They were required to swim underwater, through a long passage, and surface in the submarine bay. Tortise had provided a distraction for his crew, giving them all an hour break, so that X could get his team in position. Mega Man X had again divided his team up, and now only kept four with him altogether. The other teams were told to scout out the island, and locate the critical target points. This would include the service, and waste facilities, water treatment, food, or fuel storage containers, access to the power grid, and security systems, and finally, the armory. The Hunters were supposed to neutrallize any security forces, and occupy the area. If the base was secured internally, and all of the critical areas were seized, Doppler could not continue to support his campaign. Mega Man X would try and infiltrate the control room. His team included IO, and two hunters. One was named "Maxx," the other, "Lock."
X and Tortise were crouched behind a large stack of crates which were supposed to be loaded onto a frigate. Some of the crew were starting to return, thinking that the offensive was more important than their own rest. Mega Man X, and Wave Tortise spoke to eachother in secret, for probably the last time.
"X, this is all I can do for you."
"I know. You've already done more than I ever thought you could. I'm grateful, of course."
"This is probably the last time I will see you here. I can't afford any other meetings with you, in public or in private."
"Yeah, you might as well destroy the com-link I gave you. We used it once, I don't think we can ever use it again. They'll have figured it out by now."
"No doubt. But, X...there's something I have to tell you before you leave. Saber Wolf...he's not himself."
"What!? What do you mean?"
"Well, I saw Wolf again, just a little while ago. I asked him about his past, remember?"
"Yeah, you told me about that. Wasn't that why you came to me for help?"
"Do you know anything?"
"Only what Zero told me."
"What did he say?"
"I had been infected with the Sigma Virus through a bogus helmet upgrade I found in a cave. It was one of Sigma's lower henchmen, Tounge Frog's lair, I believe. I don't remember much after that. I do remember going to Mars with Saber Wolf though. He got some kind of Anti-Sigma virus program from someone there. I later learned that it was an agent of Doppler's. Wolf went crazy on Mars. I think he also got infected with the Sigma Virus. Someone told me that Sigma was on Mars at the time, with another of his agents. I forgot who though, because there are still some blank spots in my memory."
"What happened after Wolf went Crazy?"
"He had captured me. All I know is that Zero found me in a capsule, and when he tried to free me, Wolf ambushed him. They fought to the death inside Maverick Hunter Headquarters."
"So, Zero killed him?"
"He had no choice Tortise! Wolf had become a Maverick! He was trying to kill us all!"
Tortise felt upset by that remark. "I see. What happened then?"
"Wolf's parts were given to a business partner of his, Metal Scorpion, do you know him?"
"Yeah, I'd heard of him, but we hadn't met before now."
"So you met him also?"
"I did, but he seems just like Wolf. He doesn't seem to know who he is."
"Well, Metal Scorpion used to be the owner of a junkyard, the one Morph Moth used to own."
"What!? I had no idea!"
"Yeah, it was pretty creepy having to go back there. But, some time ago, Sigma's goons occupied the place, trying to reclaim it. Scorpion fought the Maverick's leader to the death."
"What happened then?"
"He destroyed the leader, but at the cost of his own life. After that, no one heard anything about them for a while. But I know something that no one else knows."
"About Wolf?"
"About the junk yard. It seems that Dr. Doppler bought the land out from under the nose of Scorpion's people. He then sent a team of lawyers over there, and local officials to seize the facility. He had all of the junk transported to his island, and liquidated all of the company's wealth. Then, he sold the island to the government as industrial space. I hear they're putting up a factory over there."
"Does this story have a happy ending?"
"Not exactly. Doppler searched through the parts he needed to builld some Reploid security personel on the cheap. It was then he discovered the parts of Metal Scorpion, and Saber Wolf."
"So, their bodies were recovered after all?"
"Yes! But in order to keep them under his control, he rebuilt them without any trace of memory from the past. They have no idea that they are friends, or that they had no interest in violence."
"So, He's been controlling them from day one?"
"You got it!", X told him.
"What about the other speciallists?"
"Hmm. I'm sorry, I don't know anything about them. I was hoping you could tell me something."
"All the information I have is here..."
Tortise produced a disk. He gave it to Mega Man X.
"It should work on the data pad you have in your field pack. Send this information to Signas. He'll want to see it. Oh, and X...take this. It is a security card. It will get you into some important areas."
"Tortise. Why are you giving this to me?"
"You told me what I wanted to know...what happened to Wolf. Now I know why he's acting the way he is. I wanted nothing but to enjoy my life, and my work. I wanted to be his friend too, but those days are over."
"What are you going to do?", X asked him.
"I don't know...I'll think of something. But this will be the last time we meet under friendly circumstances. If I see you again, and don't attack you, Doppler will destroy me."
"Are you saying you want to fight me?"
"No X, I'd rather not. And I'm going to try and stay as far away from you, and the other Hunters, as I can. But, if Doppler wants to, all he has to do is flip a switch, and I'm his puppet. He'll make us fight, even if I don't want to.
He's rigged us all that way."
"It must be the same type of control protocol he used on me.", X replied. Finally he was getting some answers.
"You were his greatest nemesis. He wanted to test this out on you to use it on us. But something went wrong. Since he found out that it would destroy you, he had no choice but to restore you to your normal state. His program is faulty, and makes Reploids self destruct eventually. It drives them to madness. Very similar to the state of mind the Sigma Virus gives you. Tounge Frog was actually a doule agent working for Doppler. You wern't infected witht he Sigma Virus. It was Doppler playing you all along! He did it to get his revenge on Sigma, and the world."
"What! Tounge Frog working for Doppler? But the virus--"
"If his activates it, we're all toast. I'd rather have you put me out of my misery than die that way."
"Oh Tortise...", X gasped.
"There is alot you do not understand right now X. I've told you all I can. The rest is up to you to figure out. Go, stop Dr. Doppler. There's no time! That's all you can do right now."
"Right. I understand. Thank you Tortise."
"Goodbye X." (to be continued)
