Mega Man X dropped down from the ceiling. The ventillation shaft was a perfect idea! He was able to get past all the security, and no one would even see him. The Master Control room was empty, but fortunately, it was covered with a one sided mirror. It was designed so that Doppler could see out, but no one could see in. IO's head popped out from the vent in the ceiling.
"What is it X?", he asked.
"There's no one here!", he said confused.
"That's strange! You at least think that Doppler would be here right now."
"I was thinking I would hold him up, and demand that he call his forces off. I have to do something to make Zero's job easier. I don't think they can succeed without my help here.", X replied.
The MC room had been dark when he had entered. He dropped down, and took a quick sweep of the area. He could see the four rooms, divided by massive retaining walls. Doppler's underground base was shaped like an enourmous cylinder. The MC room was in the center of the cylinder. Suddenly though, all of the monitors flicked on, one by one.
The image was of the submarine bay. Mega Man X ran to the closest monitor. IO looked down, and saw the images on the screens. Just then, Vile's face appeared on all of the monitors. IO backed up into the vent, and tried to hide himself.
"Mega Man X. I can see you perfectly from here!", Vile said.
X saw the picture change on every monitor in the room. A camera was looking right at him. Several in fact, for he could see many different angles of himself on the screens. Uh-oh! He had been found out!
"I knew you would come back here. You are a fool to think we wouldn't notice you. I don't know how you got in here, but you're not leaving here alive!"
"That's what you think! Come and face me Vile...if you dare!", X taunted.
"Oh...don't worry. We'll meet again...soon. But first, I thought I'd show you something interesting." The monitors inside th MC room went back to the first picture X saw.
"Do you see this X?", Vile asked him.
"The submarine bay?"
"Look closer." The camera zoomed up to the ceiling, as Vile spoke. X looked agahst when he saw them.
"Your friends were braver than we though! They kept resisting us...even to the point of death!", Vile taunted X.
"Where are the rest of my troops?", X was angry.
"Don't worry, you'll be joining them soon enough...in the after life! Hah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!"
"You killed them?!"
"That's right. Your mission is over! It is down to you and me now. But, I did spare their lives! So if you want to save them, you better get down here right away! I don't know how much longer they can hold on!"
Just as Vile said that, one of the Hunters could no longer hang on. He let go of the hook, and dropped like a stone into the water. Seconds later, X saw a bright flash of light under the water. Water sprayed ,and bubbled up. Debris errupted out of the water, and black fluid made the water look like a rainbow pool. Vile burst out into laughter.
"Ha ha ha ha. Oops! I guess he didn't make it!"
"You MONSTER!", X screamed.
"Hurry up X! Go and save them! Oh, and if you even think about blowing that control room, I'll drop them all! Understand? I'll be waiting for you! Ha ha ha ha h----" and with that, the monitors shut off.
"Don't go X, it is obviously a trap!", IO said.
"I have to go IO. If I don't they'll die!"
"He's not going to let any of us out of here alive! We have a job to do."
"Are you saying our comrades are not as important as our mission?", X scolded him.
"Are you saying that Vile can be trusted? You know the minute you get there, he's going to destroy all of them!"
"Maybe I can save them? Isn't it worth trying?", X pleaded.
"I don't know X. You do what you have to do. But we need to take out this control room."
"Wait. Something isn't right here.", X told him.
"What are you talking about?"
"Vile seems to think that I'm the only one left alive! I don't think he even noticed you!?"
"My body is in defense mode right now. My system detected sensors tracking us, and my defense mechanisms kicked in. I can surround my body with a sensor dampering field. They seem to be using a 3D camera system. My stealth abilities render me invisible to most forms of detection. I can also distort the view that cameras project of me."
"WOw, I had no idea!?"
"If Vile doesn't know I'm here this could work to our advantage!"
"IO, I want you to hide somewhere."
"This seems like the best place to hide, and don't worry...I'll go into a crystal cocoon. No one will be able to sense me once I'm inside there. Of course, I won't be of any use to anyone either. Why? What did you have in mind?", IO asked.
"I'm going blast my way over to the elevator. The East elevator will take me down to the submarine bay. I saw the entrance earlier."
"Ok. What do you want me to do?"
"I'm going to go after Vile. If I don't win, you're the only hope we've got. Whenever it is you come to, I want you to blow the hell out of this control room. I'd prefer it if Doppler and Vile were in here when you do that, but I won't be picky!"
"Right. I understand. Good luck X."
"You too IO." ,X smiled. IO replaced the vent cover, and charged up his crystal cocoon. Inside there, he would sleep and recharge his energy. While he did that, his primary system would go off-line, and render him invisible to any detection system. X hit the panel, and the door slid open.
As he dashed out of the room, he charged his buster up. The last thing IO heard was the sound of X's buster firing, and a lot of confusion. Then, blackness came, and IO fell asleep. (to be continued)
