He cautiously looks around, making sure that no horses are lurking around on the premises

Cobweb, please tell me, what has gone on? I'm not sure if I completely understand this

He shifts his weight from side to side. Still very cold, but soaked now from the sweat, he continues

The test I spoke of was one to size you up, as you are doing me now. You say that you cannot be hurt, but when I look into your eyes, pain is all I see. Please do not take anything I have said as an insult, for I do not know much of you. I know you are very strong, but that you are capable of nurturing some hurt-be it from dusk, or anyone else....

The colt suddenly trembles violently. His eyes are clouded with hurt, and he falls to the ground. He remains still, not sure of what is wrong with him, but somehow knowing that it might help by not moving. It is then that a swelling is easily noticable on his left hock. A closer inspection reveals to marks-that of a rattlesnake. The hock swells larger and larger, growing tight with fluids and poison. The colt crawls to the nearby stream, and drops his poisoned hock into the cold, flowing water
