I will say that pre-marital sex is definitely discouraged, and I'm sure this message was even stronger back during the 60s. However, people are human and even devout Catholics do occasionally let their hormones override their beliefs. . .if we didn't, there would be no need for confession!
And, if Maggie thought Bill Senior was being sent off to fight someplace where there was a possiblity he might have been killed in action and they were already in love and/or engaged. . .well, I think it's understandable that she might have given into temptation.
But, still, if they got married in October of '62, there's no way they could have been having their third child by February of '64, unless she was already in her last trimester of pregnancy when they got married (highly unlikely that they'd wait 'til she was that far along!) *AND* the first pregnancy was Melissa-and-Bill-Junior twins!
So, like I said, I'm inclined to write the whole thing off as a boo-boo on the part of the XF staff; kind of like the time Mulder, the Oxford-educated psychologist, announced he *wasn't* a psychologist!
