Subject: Family naming traditions.
In reply to: Scullystar 's message, "I don't know..." on 07:35:04 06/20/02 Thu

In my family and in the family I married into it was traditional to pass on past family names to new family members in some way. For example, my husband's middle name was his father's first name, and his father's middle name was "his" father's first name, and so on. The daughter was named with her mother's first name as her middle name, ie, LeAnne ( new name ) Virginia ( mom's first name ) which I always thought was just beautiful. But I had to firmly put down my foot though and break tradition when my son was born. "Felix" was up for his first name - I don't "think" so... so we placated the family by giving him the grandfather's middle name as his middle name - Elton, which I rather like..and a new name as his first name of our chosing.

Speaking of weird names, I saw an obit once for a young man named "DeVille", only it was spelled "Devil". What could those parents have been thinking to name their son "Devil"? How were people supposed to know it was "DeVille" and not "Devil"? In the obit the correct pronounciation was in parenthesis. Makes no sense to me. Just like "Kydd" being pronounced "Hyde" - ok, so name him "Hyde".

Later,
Chantal
